Of the four overtures Beethoven wrote for his opera Leonore - later renamed Fidelio - only Leonore no.3 has gained favour both in the concert hall, where it is much loved, and in the opera house, where it is often played, inappropriately, just before the finale of Fidelio.

The Mozart concerto, written for a French count who was a keen amateur flautist and his daughter, who played the harp and had composition lessons from Mozart, is a rare combination and a beautiful work.  Theresa is our lead flautist and Ruby will be making her debut with us.

Haydn’s Cello Concerto was lost and rediscovered by Charles Mackerras in 1962 since when it has become much loved. Elizabeth is a remarkably talented young local cellist.

One of Liszt’s earliest tone poems, Les Préludes  is by far his most admired.  It is a dazzling, free-flowing piece and the flagship for Liszt’s daring style of “new music”.
